Successful careers in the Police ahead for Bishop Burton students

Bishop Burton College is delighted to announce several of their Level 3 Extended Diploma in Policing students have been accepted into the Police.
Ella Edeson, Harrison Mann, Alfie Chapman, James Lancaster, Ivan Bartle-Milner and Adnan Kadric who will complete the two-year course this summer will be joining Humberside Police; and Mia Begg and Phoebe Redhead North Yorkshire Police.
The Policing qualification is designed to provide students with a good grounding and introduction to working within the service. Working closely alongside Humberside Police, the course also ensures students have the relevant knowledge and skills to progress to degree level study should they wish to.
Harrison Mann, from Willerby who has been accepted as a Police Constable with Humberside Police said of his experience “I’ve always wanted to join the police and help people. The course at Bishop Burton was a brilliant stepping stone as it has lots of practical elements and they work closely with Humberside Police, which is the force I’m joining. Joining the police at such a young age is a big thing, but I was supported to become the best version of myself I can be.”
Joanne Wood, Lecturer in Policing at the college said “I am so proud of each and every one of the students. They have worked incredibly hard and it’s wonderful to see their dedication rewarded with positions within the Police. I am confident they will progress onto hugely successful careers.”
The relationship with Humberside Police provides students with exposure to a Work Experience (WEX) programme, which offers them the opportunity to work alongside the Special Operations Team while they provide specialist training for Humberside Police officers. This covers aspects of policing they may otherwise not be aware of such as Public Order, Search, Method of Entry, the malicious use of Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear materials or weapons (CBRN) and Protestor Removal. Alongside experiencing these specialist areas students also get to engage with officers from all areas of policing who are attending these courses.
Ella Edeson, from Market Weighton who is also joining Humberside Police said “We had so many opportunities to go out and do practical work with the police. I’m going in as a Police Constable, so will be part of the team responding to 999 calls, but after my initial two years I’d like to go down the crime scene route – Search or Method of Entry - which I got to experience during the course. We got to work with and speak to police officers and get their advice, so I have real insight into what it will be like to be in this role. Going into the police is not just a job – it’s a way of life!”
To be part of the WEX programme students have to apply and are interviewed by the Special Operations Team before being offered a place.
Police Constable Nick Jones of Humberside Police commented “The students this year have particularly impressed from the standards of their interviews to the way they have engaged whilst on WEX. They have fully immersed themselves in the days they attended impressing both the training staff and the officers attending the courses with how they have conducted themselves and by the questions they have asked and the willingness to learn.”
The college is dedicated to preparing students to be work ready and have exposure to industry specific to their vocation.
Ryan Phillips Head of Department: Sport, Public Services, Policing & Forensic Sciences said “To see so many of our students progressing directly into the Police is fantastic. The industry expertise of our highly experienced team and practical nature of the qualification, in combination with our amazing relationship with Humberside Police has clearly motivated and inspired our students. Those who are not joining the service on completion, are all progressing onto degree level study in subjects including Criminology and Professional Policing. I am incredibly proud of all of them and can’t wait to see what they accomplish next.”
