RSPCA Hull & East Riding Awarded Armed Forces Covenant Employer Recognition Scheme Bronze Award

1 October 2024

RSPCA Hull & East Riding is proud to announce it has been awarded the prestigious Armed Forces Covenant Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) Bronze Award. This recognition highlights the charity’s ongoing commitment to supporting members of the Armed Forces community, including veterans, reservists, and their families.

Bronze award

As a Bronze Award holder, RSPCA Hull & East Riding demonstrates its dedication to offering employment opportunities and volunteering roles to ex-service personnel, recognising the valuable, transferable skills they bring to the organisation. From leadership and teamwork to problem-solving under pressure, the abilities honed during military service are highly beneficial in the work of animal rehabilitation, and rehoming.

The charity is also committed to providing a welcoming environment for Armed Forces veterans and their families who volunteer across the animal care, retail, events and marketing. Volunteers play a vital role in the daily operations of RSPCA Hull & East Riding, and ex-service personnel bring a wealth of experience that enriches the team and helps it in getting the best outcomes for looked cared for animals.

In addition to supporting veterans through volunteering, the charity understands the therapeutic value of working with animals. Engaging with our animals has proven mental health benefits, offering comfort, companionship, and a sense of purpose. For ex-service members transitioning back into civilian life, the opportunity to volunteer in animal care can be both fulfilling and restorative.

With the Bronze Award in place, RSPCA Hull & East Riding invites more members of the Armed Forces community to join its growing team of volunteers. Whether helping care for animals or supporting the charity's wider initiatives, volunteers have the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of animals and people alike.

Fred Owen, CEO for RSPCA Hull & East Riding said: “We are incredibly honoured to receive the Armed Forces Covenant Employer Recognition Scheme Bronze Award. It’s a testament to our commitment to supporting those who have served, and we are excited to further develop opportunities for veterans and their families within our charity. The positive impact that volunteering with animals can have on mental well-being cannot be understated, and we look forward to welcoming more members of the Armed Forces community to our team.”
