Public consultation launched for Humber H2ub® (Green) hydrogen project at Uniper’s Killingholme site
8 November 2024
- Uniper is commencing public consultation on its proposals to develop a new green hydrogen production facility at its Killingholme site
- Plans are for up to 120MW green hydrogen production, as announced earlier this year
- The hydrogen would be supplied to Phillips 66 Limited’s Humber Refinery from 2029
- The public consultation will start today, 8 November 2024
- Public consultation event to be held on 19 November at North Killingholme village hall
Earlier this year, Uniper outlined its proposals for the Humber H2ub® (Green) project, to produce electrolytic hydrogen which meets the UK Low Carbon Hydrogen Standard, at its Killingholme site, in the Humber.
Uniper will be inviting local residents, councils and other organisations to attend a public information event about the project. This event will give local people the opportunity to understand more about our plans and to meet the project team - details are included below. A detailed planning application is then due to be submitted next year.
The Humber H2ub® (Green) project includes plans for an initial electrolytic hydrogen production capacity of up to 120 MW, with the potential for future expansion. The hydrogen would be used to replace some refinery fuel gas in industrial scale fired heaters, as part of Phillips 66 Limited’s plans to reduce the Humber Refinery’s scope 1 operational emissions.
The potential development of a hydrogen production facility at Killingholme could also help to maintain economic prosperity in the Humber region. We anticipate that if consented and developed, the Humber H2ub® (Green) hydrogen production facility could create up to 110 jobs on site during construction along with potential opportunities through the wider supply chain. Once operational, as well as providing permanent on site jobs, the green hydrogen production facility could support jobs across the region and wider UK associated with its maintenance and electricity supply.
Operation of the proposed facility is also expected to deliver over £40m per annum of GVA in present value terms for the UK economy. Of this, up to £20m per annum could benefit the Yorkshire and Humber region.
"We would like to encourage people to come along to the public information events to find out more about our plans for the site. Our Killingholme site is ideally placed with excellent utilities infrastructure, and we believe the Humber H2ub® (Green) project could make an important contribution to kick starting the hydrogen economy in the Humber region. It has the potential to support the UK’s hydrogen and decarbonisation ambitions, creating new high-skilled employment opportunities and ensuring the site continues to make a valuable contribution to the regional economy."
