Visual Designer

Full time - 37 hours per week

Could you be our next Visual Designer? We're looking for a creative and skilled graphic designer to join our experienced Marketing Team. From live events to club nights, student elections to Freshers, if you are looking to work on a diverse range of design briefs in a fun and friendly environment then this could be the job for you.

About Us

Hull University Students’ Union is a Charity, with a large trading subsidiary which included SPAR and JD Wetherspoon; our primary purposes are:

  • Advancement of education, promoting the interests and welfare of students during study and representing, supporting and advising students.
  • Being the recognised representative channel between students and the University of Hull and other representative bodies.
  • Providing social, cultural sporting, recreational activities, and forums for discussions and debate for the personal development of its students.

Our Trading Subsidiary provides a range of services for students including, a Supermarket, a pub, a nightclub, coffee and food outlets.

Role Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

             1.       Organisational/service development

·        To evolve and maintain HUSU’s brand look and feel in line with brand purpose, values and strategic direction across online and offline touchpoints.

·        To create concepts, brand and support assets in collaboration with HUSU departments and the marketing team. Concepts will include campaigns of the Charity and Commercial Services sub-brands.

            2.     Service Delivery

·        To coordinate and develop the brand identity of the organisation.

·        To take the lead in developing new and re-developing existing identities and brands.

·        To be responsible for research, creative development and presentation.

·        To work under own initiative to develop and build new brands, promotions and opportunities that will increase engagement and communications for HUSU.

·        To work alongside HUSU Commercial Outlets team on promoting their brands and supporting them through the creation of print and digital publicity when needed.

·        To be responsible for internal and external signage and work alongside design agencies where necessary to develop the interiors of Student Central and HUSU Commercial Outlets.

3.  Reporting and information management

·        To provide expert advice and guidance to the Marketing Manager on issues   relating to the organisation’s brands and image; suggesting solutions or avenues of exploration.

·        To coordinate the short and long-term provision and organisation of resources, including communications and identity guidelines.

·        To remain up to date with design innovation and trends, both locally and nationally, through research and networking.

·        To analyse information from a range of internal and external sources to improve the quality and impact of creative solutions – ensuring key messages are accurately conveyed through the design.

·        To research and develop an understanding of HUSU’s membership demographics target markets.

             4.     Staff management

·        This role does not have any line management responsibility.

5.      General duties and responsibilities

·        To establish and maintain positive working relationships with key university staff, departments and external stakeholders.

·        To give clear direction to the marketing team to ensure initial stakeholder briefs are sufficient to undertake the required design works.

·        To undertake other such duties as may be reasonably requested by your line manager appropriate to the grade and responsibilities of this post.

6.      Compliance

·        To ensure HUSU adheres to copyright, designs and patents legislation when developing and creating design artwork ensuring compliance with GDPR regulations. 

About You

Essential

  • Educated to degree level in Graphic Design or equivalent experience
  • Experience of working in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience of advising stakeholders on design work and most suitable means of achieving the best outcome
  • Experience of using creativity under pressure to deliver positive outcomes an impact
  • Experience of producing intitial concepts as well as expertise and advising stakeholders accordingly.  Creative input from the inception stage of design work through to its final production
  • Specialised knowledge and skills in the area of Graphic Design (e.g. typography, layout, image manipulation)
  • Highly skilled in (but not limited) to Adobe Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop
  • Specialised/advanced knowledge of specific relevant software for design (Adobe Creative Suite, Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign)
  • Specialised/advanced knowledge of print/production techniques relative to graphic design/printing.
  • Accurate spelling and good standard of written English
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Excellent PC and Mac Skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong time management skills, ability to work to tight deadlines, working on a number of projects and ability to cope with a varying workload
  • Able to work well under pressure
  • Able to work within a team as well as using own initiative

Desirable

  • Experience of project management and software
  • Knowledge of other relevant areas of expertise e.g. copy writing, web programming, and photography
  • Knowledge of relevant marketing techniques
