Humber news round-up – 18th October 2024
18 October 2024
It's been another busy week in Humber, where we've once again been inspired by the achievements of our proactive and confident Humber citizens and the positive impact they've made on our region.
Something fishy is going on
Playing to our region’s strengths and resourcing one of our biggest industries for the future, a trail-blazing collaboration has launched the UK’s first Seafood School.
Based at Grimsby Institute in a partnership with a host of regional leaders in seafood including Made Great in Grimsby, Alfred Enderby and Hilton Foods Seachill, the school engages students through the passing on of seafood-specific management and culinary skills to empower and prepare them to thrive in this key sector.

Ørsted, a major player in offshore wind in Humber are pushing boundaries with virtual work experience. A creative solution to increasing accessibility to a growing industry, Ørsted has partnered with Springpod to bring valuable insights directly to students throughout the whole of the UK and Ireland.
With a staggering 50% of students leaving school having had no work experience at all, Ørsted seeks to bridge the gap using digital technology, raising aspirations and encouraging more young people to consider working in the renewable energy sector. This is well worth a few hours of anyone’s time.

Celebrating a whole decade of impact in health and social care
A collaboration in a different sector is celebrating 10 years of impact. The Medical, Health and Social Care Academy, run by the outstanding St Mary’s College in Hull, offers students a unique insight into the thriving medical and healthcare sector that has become a hallmark of the Humber region.
It has trained more than 750 students to date with more than half going on to start careers in the NHS, social care and third sector care organisations. They are currently enrolling for the next cohort of students.

Blooming wonderful partnership working!
In efforts to create a thriving wildflower environment at the Humber Bridge Country Park, East Riding of Yorkshire Council are seeking volunteers to help them plant 4,000 wildflowers and 120 trees and create nature-friendly areas over the course of three days. The Love Your Meadow planting weekend takes place from the 26th to the 28th October 2024. If you want to help, we are sure that the Friends of HBCP would appreciate your support.
Mires Beck Nursery, a charity in East Yorkshire which engages and employs learning disabled adults in horticulture, is growing and supplying all the wildflowers for this exciting project. This is a resourceful partnership working at its best!
