Flooding matters: Hull’s new Flood Awareness Centre helps residents prepare
28 November 2024
Living With Water is proud to announce the launch of its new Flood Awareness Centre in Hull city centre. The pop-up centre - which is open every day this week until Saturday (30th November) - is designed to raise awareness of flood risk, and help residents of Hull and the East Riding prepare for flooding.
The centre, located at 23 Paragon Street, aims to engage local people, build awareness, and foster resilience as the city faces increasing flood risks due to climate change, tidal surges and other environmental factors.
There will also be information at the pop-up around Living With Water – the partnership between Yorkshire Water, Hull City Council, East Riding of Yorkshire Council, the Environment Agency and the University of Hull – all of which have a role to play in managing water in Hull and the East Riding.
Lauren Murtagh, Living With Water Community Coordinator at Hull City Council says
“As Hull is second only to London in terms of flood risk, this centre is more vital than ever. The Flood Awareness Centre will provide an opportunity for residents to learn how to prepare for and mitigate the impacts of flooding in a changing climate.
“Flooding is everyone’s responsibility. it is important to understand Hull’s unique situation and what we can all do to help keep ourselves and our communities safe. The centre is a chance for the Hull community to build awareness, confidence and resilience. Living With Water aims to empower residents with the knowledge they need to take action individually while understanding the work being done to protect Hull collectively.”
The centre will offer a wide range of activities, workshops, and drop-in sessions designed to help people understand the key issues surrounding flooding, including how to secure flood insurance, protect pets during a flood, and learn more about Hull’s unique ecological history.
Visitors will be able to take part in interactive workshops, such as the Flood Recovery Board Game, a fun and engaging way to learn about flood recovery. There will also be opportunities for Q&A sessions on a range of topics, including Hull’s history with water, flood preparedness, and property flood resistance (PFR). The centre will also feature interactive flood models, a mapping exercise, and the chance to speak directly with experts in ecology, water management and insurance.
