Financing palliative care in North Lincolnshire

11 February 2025

Hull-based fibre network operator MS3 Networks has sponsored palliative care charity Lindsey Lodge Hospice and Healthcare’s Pennies Make Pounds appeal for a second consecutive year. The partnership will build on the success of the initial campaign, which won a Hospice UK Innovation in Income Generation Award in 2024.

Pennies Make Pounds encourages supporters to ‘adopt’ a pig money box for their home or business. They can deposit their spare change to raise funds for Lindsey Lodge Hospice, which provides palliative care in North Lincolnshire. Over time, supporters can collect a full family of pig money boxes, including ‘Phil’ and ‘Penny’.

The first year of the campaign saw more than 600 pig boxes adopted, marking a 60 per cent increase on Lindsey Lodge’s previous collection tin appeal, where supporters filled house boxes with spare change. By allowing participants to bank their donations in their local Lindsey Lodge shop rather than drive to the hospice site, the campaign also increased retail footfall and lowered the appeal’s carbon footprint.

Judges from Hospice UK’s Income Generation Awards were impressed by the Pennies Make Pounds campaign’s innovative approach, which focused on the big difference that small donations can make.

The continued support from MS3 will allow Lindsey Lodge to continue providing vital in-patient, day care and family support services for local communities in a time where hospices are facing nationwide funding difficulties. One-fifth of UK hospices made cuts to their services in the year ending July 2024 or were planning to do so.

“Here at Lindsey Lodge Hospice and Healthcare we are proud that during this time of national hardship all of our services have remained open. This would not have been possible without the continued support from our community and local businesses like MS3 Networks. It is thanks to sponsorship like this that we are able to keep up with the increasing demand on our services and provide our high-quality care to North Lincolnshire patients and their families.

“We are thrilled that our Pennies Makes Pounds initiative was awarded the prestigious national award by Hospice UK last year, recognising the hard work and innovation from our fundraising and retail staff and volunteers as well as the support from MS3 Networks and everyone who supported the campaign.” explained Karen Griffiths, Chief Executive of Lindsey Lodge Hospice and Healthcare.

Investing in charity causes is central to MS3’s commitment to creating long-term social impact, with the business also partnering with the Hull-based Sailors’ Children’s Society, which offers financial support to the children of seafarers.

“Lindsey Lodge is an important community asset for the people of North Lincolnshire, due to the high quality of care it provides to patients and the bereavement and wellbeing support it offers their families,” said Adam Kelly, Head of Marketing at MS3.

“We’re looking forward to sponsoring the campaign again to ensure that the local community can continue to benefit from this vital resource.”
