Dove House Hospice Joins National Campaign to Highlight the Importance of Hospice Care

18 February 2025

Dove House Hospice is proud to participate in the national "This is Hospice Care" campaign, facilitated by Hospice UK. This initiative unites over 140 hospices across England, Scotland, and Wales to raise awareness about the critical role hospice care plays in communities and to encourage public support for these vital services.

Launching on Monday, 17th February, the campaign features a moving TV advert inspired by real-life hospice stories. Its aim is to change perceptions of hospice care and inspire people to consider leaving a gift in their will to support their local hospice. These gifts are crucial for ensuring that hospices like Dove House can continue providing compassionate, specialist care for years to come.

As people live longer, the complexity of patients and the demand for hospice care is set to increase significantly. In Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire, this growing need places unprecedented pressure on Dove House Hospice, which already relies heavily on community support and funding.

Chris Sadler, Chief Executive Officer of Dove House Hospice says:

“For many of us, a hospice will touch our lives, whether for ourselves, a loved one, or a friend, providing comfort, dignity, and expert care through life’s most challenging times. Dove House is an essential part of our healthcare services but is predominantly funded through charitable donations and support from the local community. Gifts in wills are a vital part of our funding and critical in helping to sustain our services both now and in the future.”

Evie Gunnell, Individual Giving Fundraiser at Dove House says: “Every legacy gift, no matter the size, helps Dove House continue providing free, specialist care to those who need it most. By including us in your will you're helping us ensure that vital services remain accessible to everyone in Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire."

Legacy gifts already play a pivotal role in sustaining Dove House’s services funding the cost of caring for one in ten patients. However, as future needs grow, so too must the support received from the community.

“As my Dad’s prostate and lung cancer progressed, we hadn’t even considered that Dove House would be an option, favouring dying at home but all of my family were pleased he spent his final days in comfort at Dove House.” Jess, Hull

“It’s a rollercoaster, but my dad got the best care he sorely needed and deserved. What a team you have a Dove House Hospice. Everyone always had a smile and a kind/funny word. Can’t thank you all enough for looking after him so well. I am eternally grateful to you all.” John, Cottingham

These accounts exemplify the profound impact of these gifts. The families left a legacy donation to Dove House Hospice after experiencing its compassionate care firsthand. This contribution helps to ensure that Dove House has a sustainable future, so that others in Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire can benefit from similar care and support.

As the local hospice supporting patients and their families across Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire, Dove House Hospice invites local residents to join the conversation about hospice care and consider leaving a gift in their will.
