Discover a magical hidden world underneath the floorboards at Hull Truck Theatre this November with The Borrowers (Friday 29 November 2024 – Saturday 4 January 2025) presenting audiences with a perfect alternative to pantomime during the festive season. Based on the original novel by Italian author, Mary Norton, Charles Way’s re-imagined adaptation, directed by Hull Truck Theatre’s Artistic Director Mark Babych will captivate audiences of all ages. With live music played on stage and songs by composer and co-lyricist John Biddle, this much-loved classic family favourite promises to take audiences on an epic journey and an enchanting adventure.
The Borrowers will follow Arrietty Clock and her small, but perfectly formed family as they borrow from the humans who live in the house above them. Furnishing their home and fuelling their appetites with their finds, The Borrowers, just like humans make mistakes, and here is where the real adventure will begin…into the unknown to find a new home.
Tickets are now available to join Arrietty and the magical cast of characters as The Borrowers explore themes of adventure, friendship and the joy of love and togetherness. Recommended age guidance: 7+.

For drama and book lovers alike, How To Be Brave by writer Louise Beech (Friday 1 – Saturday 2 November) will tell the adapted to stage story of Grandad Colin and how his story inspired his granddaughter to face her diabetes diagnosis with determination and the drive to carry on when she wanted to give up. Learn of the story of Colin Armitage and how his ship was torpedoed in the South Atlantic, how he scrambled onto a raft and 50 days later was rescued by HMS Rapid. “If Grandad Colin can survive an ordeal like that, I can do these injections” – this is how Katy learnt to be brave.
It’s the EURO 2020 Final at Wembley and Billy’s gone viral! Why I Stuck A Flare Up My Arse (Thursday 7 – Friday 8 November) is a funny new play that comes to Hull directly from a sell-out, five-star Edinburgh Festival run. Written and performed by Alex Hill, it asks what it means to belong to a club that you live for.
Best Of ‘Ull (Wednesday 6 November) will bring this years Hull Comedy Festival to a close at Hull Truck Theatre with a showpiece event featuring Hull’s multi-award-winning comedians. See what everyone’s laughing about in this ‘Hullarious’ show for one-night-only.
For fans of the TV comedy drama and ever popular hit – The Vicar Of Dibley (Friday 8 – Saturday 9 November) promises to be a real treat with a stage adaptation that will be sure to spark some fond memories. Local group, One Off Productions will return to Hull Truck Theatre with this Amateur production, performing many of the scenes from the BBC sit com.
If this isn’t enough, fans of The Vicar of Dibley can also see Paul Mayhew-Archer who co-wrote the show, perform The Incurable Optimist (Wednesday 6 November). Fourteen Years ago, Paul was told he had Parkinson’s, and he decided to carry on laughing, this is a show that’s full of funny stories about his career and his condition and he does it to raise awareness and money for local Parkies.
Hull Jazz Festival (Saturday 9 – Saturday 16 November) returns to Hull Truck Theatre with four music events featuring a variety of talented musicians. From The London Django Collective (Saturday 9 November) will present a glorious afternoon of jazz standards from the Great American Songbook, playing with humour and skill. Zoe Rahman and Arun Ghosh (Saturday 9 November) will collaborate presenting a mix of jazz styles bringing a force of musical influences from British-Bengali heritage and from jungle to punk, blues to Bollywood and beyond. Meet Me In The Middle (Saturday 16 November) welcomes back award-winning saxophonist Emma Johnson with big band pieces exploring themes of belonging and the search for Home. The Torch: Kobby Taylor’s Tribute to Afrobeat Legend Ebo Taylor (Saturday 16 November) will present a live concept album on stage with RnB remixes, hip hop and modern afro-beat.

Starting with jazz violinist Matt Holborn’s gypsy jazz homage to Django Reinhardt and finishing with Kobby Taylor’s tribute to his Ghanaian grandfather, Afrobeat legend Ebo Taylor, the Festival takes in big band jazz from Hull Youth Jazz Orchestra and a unique collaboration between two of the brightest stars on the scene pianist Zoe Rahman and clarinettist Arun Ghosh, the Festival presents a diverse and celebratory look at jazz in the UK today”
Hull Independent Cinema will present two evenings of film screenings in November - Only The River Flows (15) (Tuesday 12 November) follows police detective Ma as he attempts to uncover a series of murders in this violent crime thriller. Girls Will Be Girls (15) (Thursday 14 November) will be a heartfelt coming-of-age drama about the sudden discovery of romance and desire.
Finally, don’t miss the chance to sign up to another Hull Truck Theatre First Thursday Theatre Club. The subject for November is Acting: Unlocking Shakespearean Soliloquies (Thursday 7 November), inviting participants to sign up and join Hull Truck Theatre’s Associate Director, Tom Saunders, for a practical exploration unpicking, understanding and performing Shakespeare Soliloquies. Participants should come away from the session with a short and simple toolkit for approaching Shakespeare’s speeches.
