The Waterline Summit 2023 - Student Sustainability Challenge
Day 1 of the Waterline Summit 2023 saw the final round of the Student Sustainability Challenge, this year brought to life by Phillips 66.
The competition, entered by teams of Year 9 and 10 students on both sides of the Humber estuary, comprised a number of rounds. The top projects were selected to exhibit at The Waterline Summit 2023 at Aura Innovation Centre on the 13th November. A shortlist of three teams presented to the judges and one team, Sir John Nelthorpe School, Brigg were declared the winners.
Their project, a proposal to introduce more seaweed farms to the Humber region, was well researched and well presented. Congratulations to the team! They have picked up £5,000 towards STEM projects for their school and have a trip to Phillips 66 Humber Refinery, and a trip to London to visit the Phillips 66 London Office and the Houses of Parliament to enjoy.
Other projects entered covered a wide range of topics including using DNA to compress cloud storage, introducing Hydro-power on the River Humber, using solar glass to power EVs and improving the quality of and expanding salt marshes. All very interesting projects which were a pleasure to discuss with the students. Thank you to everyone taking part in this valued and valuable annual event.
