Around 100 business leaders came together at Hull Truck Theatre last week for Future Humber’s exclusive Principal and Major Partner Event. The gathering was a dynamic platform for high-impact conversations on the Humber region’s future, reinforcing its position as a global powerhouse.

The event opened with a powerful address from Future Humber Chair Bill Walker, who reinforced the significance of the Principal and Major Partners in shaping the region’s future. He emphasised that Humber’s assets and opportunities rival those of any other region in the UK, positioning it as “the true jewel in the green growth crown.” Walker called on businesses and stakeholders to stand proud, be noticed, and drive action, declaring that the Humber is ready to make things happen.

Following this call for collaboration and action, an influential lineup of speakers took to the stage, each offering powerful insights into Humber’s trajectory as a global leader in green growth, infrastructure, and devolution. These key voices shaped the discussion, reinforcing Humber’s pivotal role in driving national and international progress.

Andrew Dawes, Regional Director for Associated British Ports (ABP) Humber, spoke passionately about the opportunities and challenges in the region. Reflecting on his recent move to Humber, Dawes expressed his admiration for the area, describing it as a “remarkable place” that is bursting with potential. He outlined ABP’s significant investment plans in the region, including ambitious projects in green energy, automotive storage, and advanced manufacturing. “The Humber is the heartbeat of it all,” Dawes stated. “We are investing today and ready for tomorrow.” He also shared his excitement about the future of Humber’s ports, particularly in driving forward the energy transition, highlighting the region’s crucial role in achieving the UK’s decarbonisation targets.

Dame Diana Johnson DBE, MP for Hull North and Cottingham, shared insights into government initiatives and their impact on Humber. She spoke openly about the region’s infrastructure and regeneration needs, acknowledging the challenges but also highlighting its significant potential. She thanked Future Humber and Bondholders for championing the region, stating: “Thank you to Bondholders and Future Humber for promoting the Humber and for celebrating our region’s people and work.” Johnson also delivered a strong call to action on the region’s national importance, adding, “The future of the Humber holds the key to the future of the UK, and we need to be thinking about what the Humber can do for the country, not what our country can do for the Humber.”

Akash Paun, Programme Director at the Institute for Government, brought a national perspective to the conversation, discussing the evolving landscape of devolution and the opportunities it presents for regions like the Humber. Paun examined how new mayoral combined authorities (MCAs) could play a pivotal role in shaping local growth strategies, particularly in areas such as transport, housing, and skills development. His insights into the devolution process sparked lively discussion among attendees, with many emphasising the need for Humber to work together and advocate for its interests on the national stage.

The event also featured a Q&A session, where attendees raised questions on a variety of topics, including the role of businesses in regional governance, the importance of public engagement in devolution deals, and the need for increased investment in infrastructure. The conversations revealed a shared commitment to ensuring that Humber’s unique opportunities are fully realised, with a focus on creating a unified vision for the region’s future.

As the event drew to a close, Future Humber Chair Bill Walker reflected on the key takeaway: the Humber’s true potential lies in the strength of its collaborations. He emphasised that the region must continue to build on its strengths and work together to ensure a sustainable, prosperous future for all its communities.
